Nina Hoss

Excellent in every respect: she is one of the few internationally successful actresses in Germany

Nina Hoss (born 1975 in Stuttgart) is one of Germany's most important contemporary actresses in both film and theatre. She completed her acting studies at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin in 1997. This was followed by theatre engagements at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, the Berliner Ensemble, the Schauspielhaus Zürich, the Salzburg Festival and the Theater im Westen in Stuttgart, among others. In 1996, Bernd Eichinger engaged her for the leading role of Rosemarie Nitribitt in his television remake of ‘Das Mädchen Rosemarie’. For ‘Toter Mann’ (2002) and ‘Wolfsburg’ (2003), both directed by Christian Petzold, she was awarded the Adolf Grimme Prize; she has worked with Petzold for many years since then (including on ‘Yella’, ‘Barbara’, ‘Transit’ and ‘Phoenix’). Her other projects include ‘Return to Montauk’ (2017) as well as the series ‘Homeland’ (2014-17) and ‘Shadowplay’ (2020). Nina Hoss has received numerous awards for her work, including the Bavarian Film Award (2005), the Silver Bear at the Berlinale (2007), the German Film Award (2008) and the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany (2013). In 2016, she was a member of the jury at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival.
